Surprise mom!

So I had to share this sweet session I did last month.  Miss Megan contacted me about surprising her mom with pictures of she and her brother.  I loved the idea but outdoor photos in January can be challenging and most likely cold.  We did it though.  We met down at PNC Park and checked out the bridges as well as walked the path.  It's such a great place for photos, with the bridges and buildings as a back drop.  Megan and her brother were such good sports, enduring the cold and walking all over with me.

The catch was that I couldn't share the images until she shared them with mom.  So they've had their celebration and now I can post some of our images from that morning.

I also couldn't resist posting some shots I grabbed while waiting to start.  I just can't resist these bridges.
 Happy birthday to Megan's mom!

Starting 2012 with a wedding!

It's official!  I'm taking the plunge into weddings.  I ended up photographing 3 weddings in 2011 and I enjoyed all 3.  Weddings are a lot of work.  A lot of prep beforehand, a lot of work during, and even more work afterwards.   There's a reason why wedding photographers charge so much.  It's not all about snapping happy pictures and enjoying the food.  It's also a huge commitment to the couple.  I went into each of them thinking, "I'm not going to do weddings.  That's not what I do" and each couple just seemed to fit with what I do.  For some reason commanding the attention of a class of 35 middle schoolers never intimidated me as much as getting the attention of a group of wedding attendants.  And yet, I manage to do that and to also capture some beautiful stuff as well.

My first wedding of the year was at the beginning of January and was yet another wedding where I thought, "Nope, I'm not really a wedding photographer.  This isn't going to work."  But sometimes, God has other ideas about what we can and can't do.

The bride sent me an email inquiring about my availability and services and I saw the date- Jan 14.  Well, that was easy enough.  My family had just made plans for a get together at my dad's camp.  We were supposed to be out of town that weekend.  I sent my regrets to the bride and went on my merry way.  Then I talked to my brothers and found out that the plans were falling through.  We needed to reschedule the weekend away.  I was now free and not knowing if the couple had been able to find a photographer at the last minute I thought I would at least let them know that my weekend had opened up.

Well, they were happy with my availability and we met and I immediately became excited to work with them.  Such a sweet couple and beautiful together.  It was amazing to see how their wedding came together so quickly- amazing to see God at work.

Congratulations Sharon and John!  Thank you for letting me be part of your day!

Winter Wedding and BetterPhoto Finalist!

I had the privilege of photographing the wedding of one of my friends from college.  We did engagement pictures back in October and the wedding was mid-December, right before Christmas.  It was my first opportunity to officially photograph in Phipps Conservatory, an absolutely beautiful venue but also a really dark venue, at least in December.  I still had so much fun.  I think what I enjoy the most with photographing weddings is getting to see the love between the couple.  I can just feel my heart swelling sometimes when I'm looking through my viewfinder.  It's a very special opportunity.

and this final image was selected as a finalist for the January 2012 photo contest!  I get so excited when my images get recognized by other photographers, especially when it's an image I particulars enjoy.
